Investigations
This part of my digital portfolio will highlight some of the activities or investigations that we do in our math/physics.
Penny Lab
In this activity we counted pennies and sorted them by date. We learned how to count the five measures of spread from pennies and finding out how to find the mean, mode, median. This was very helpful for the kids who needed a reminder or learn something new. We now know how to create a box and whisker plot and how to find outliers and etc.
" Lights Out "
In this investigation we were suppose to create a flash light with two batteries, wires, gum, paper clips, notebook, foil, paper bag, loose change and a pen. when we walked into class it was dark and we were set in groups. In our group we had to read a handout, a story about two boys who went to explore a cave but the flashlight was running out of juice and so they only had a few minutes to create a flash light with what they had. Our group worked together to create a flash light. We put the two batteries together, we used the gum to hold the wires down to the batteries then we connected the light bulb to the wires and it worked. Then our teacher took our group to the teachers bathroom and turned off the lights and we tested our flashlight, it worked. We were the first to be done. We learned about circuits and how to work with what we had around us. We had to test if certain materials helped light the bulb or if certain materials helped for the batteries to stick together.
Barbie Jump
For this activity we were set in groups of three to two people. Our directions were to test the barbie's jumps 9 times. We were given rubber bands to test on the barbie. we had to attach a certain amounts of rubber bands to our barbie to test how far she would go. We held her down against the white board, which had a measuring tape along so we could measure her jump. We did this three times for each section then at the end we found the best answer and plugged it into our equation. We used both the calculators and our equation. Then we went to High Tech High Media Arts school which has an open stair case. We went at the top and threw our barbie off from the side. Who ever got barbie closest to the ground won bonus points. From this activity we learned more about equations and formulas.
